Removable dental prosthesis

The removable dental prosthesis, commonly called denture, is a replacement device for natural teeth. The professionals of the Mon Smile team offer you high quality prostheses for increased comfort and a radiant smile.

Dentures are used by dental health professionals to replace natural teeth. When they deem it necessary, your dentist may recommend that you wear dentures to replace one or more missing teeth due to an accident, oral disease or a hygiene problem. But do you really know them?

There are several types of removable dentures that are custom-made from an impression model.

Partial dentures can be used to replace one or more missing teeth, but also when neighbouring teeth are not strong and healthy enough to support a dental bridge. It is made up of artificial teeth and held in the mouth by hooks that attach to neighbouring natural teeth. It is recommended to remove it overnight for cleaning.

The complete dental prosthesis is used when there are no more natural teeth in the maxilla or mandible. In the maxilla, it is held in place by suction while in the mandible, the prosthesis sits on the gum. The full denture can be uncomfortable at first and it can take a while to get used to it.

It is possible to have what is called an immediate full denture that is made before your teeth are extracted. During your first visit, your dentist takes measurements of your jawbone and creates a model. The immediate denture is inserted after the teeth are extracted. The advantage of having an immediate denture is that you don’t have to wait until the end of the healing period, which can extend up to 6 months, to have teeth. During the healing period, your bones and gums may shrink, which may cause the dentist to correct the prosthesis immediately to make it fit better.

Removable dental prosthesis on implants

Dental prostheses on implants are attached directly to one or more implants which act as artificial roots. They have the advantage of preventing the deterioration of bone and gums over time by stimulating the jaws, as natural teeth do. These also make it easy to eat all types of food. This solution is the ideal choice when dealing with problems with prostheses that move and do not stay in place.

The duration of a removable dental prosthesis

In general, a dental prosthesis has a duration which varies from 5 to 7 years. The duration varies from patient to patient due to movement of the bone and gums. It is therefore recommended to have your prostheses checked every five years by a dental professional. They will be able to assess whether your prostheses are suitable for your gums. Also, if you notice that your prosthesis is becoming uncomfortable or that there seems to be a breakage, make an appointment with a specialist for an evaluation.
